SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team continued its winning ways Sunday, beating UC San Diego 4-1 at home to extend its win streak to five matches and stay undefeated in Big West play.Noah Berry and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca picked up at win at the No. 3 spot, but UC San Diego got wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to take the doubles.
Despite losing the doubles point. Cal Poly put together a strong performance in singles. Berry put the Mustangs board after a dominant win at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-0. He has now won four straight matches and is a team-best 12-4 this year.
Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith was right behind him after a strong showing of his own at the No. 3 spot, getting the win 6-0, 6-1. He has also now won his last four matches and is 9-4 on the season.
After playing in his first match of the season Saturday, redshirt sophomore Ben Keyser picked up his second straight win Sunday at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-2 to put Cal Poly ahead 3-1.
Freshman Bastiaan Weststrate clinched the dual for the Mustangs after he won his match at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 7-5 to move his record to 4-3.
Cal Poly's next two matches will be against non-conference opponents. The Mustangs will head up to Palo Alto where they will face Santa Clara on a neutral court Wednesday, April 13 at 11 a.m. They will then take on No. 14 Stanford on Thursday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
The win moves the No. 59 Mustangs to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the Big West to stay in first place in the conference standings. With just one regular season conference match to play, they are seeking to win their second straight Big West regular season title. That could be decided April 23 when Cal Poly hosts UCSB, who is currently 3-1. If the Gauchos beat UC Riverside on April 18 to move to 4-1, that will set up a scenario in which the winner of the April 23 match would be crowned the outright Big West regular season champion.
For the second match in as many days, the Mustangs were able to win the dual despite losing the doubles point to the Tritons (4-17, 0-4 BWC). Sophomore
