Cal Poly Wraps Up First Third of 2022 Spring Camp on Saturday

The competition on the Doerr Family Field turf, however, continues to heat up.
The Cal Poly football team is a third of the way through its first Spring Camp in three years and head coach Beau Baldwin is liking what he sees so far.
"I am seeing our guys' bodies in better position," said Baldwin. "A lot of that goes with the strength and conditioning they have done in the offseason to lead up to this. This is our first spring ball, so we're laying that foundation that is so important and we're seeing the results with the way the guys move, with the strength, some of the speed and change of direction. It's all a carryover of our development from January through March and now into April."
Cal Poly's last two spring camps were delayed and eventually cancelled altogether due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a sense of normalcy has returned to the daily lives of the players and coaches.
"Everybody in the world is feeling more normalcy, but being new to the program two years ago, it's maybe a little different than some other teams," Baldwin said. "Everyone went through stuff that was much more serious than us, but I like to still keep things in perspective. We definitely feel like, now that this is a true offseason, we're laying the true foundation for the fall season."
Over 90 football players have been going through drills since March 31, ultimately leading up to the annual Spring Game, slated for April 30 at noon, also at Doerr Family Field. Baldwin and his staff welcomed back 62 lettermen, including 11 who started five or more games on offense and eight on defense last fall, along with 23 redshirts and three newcomers to camp.
To be sure, as with all practices, there were some ups and downs, but Baldwin is liking what he sees so far.
"No matter what they do, the players don't let the dips continue," said Baldwin. "They start responding and climbing again. That's what I am seeing out of these guys. They don't let the dips continue to dip. They start responding and climbing again after they take a dip.
"Everyone is going to take dips. Everyone likes to get one percent better every day. In reality, no one lives their lives one percent better every day," Baldwin added. "You take dips and go through moments that aren't perfect. It's just a matter of not letting those continue to free fall down. That's what I love about our guys. When they do have a dip, in a period or a practice, they come back swinging."
Is Baldwin's club where he expected it to be at this point in time?
"It's never a finished product. You're always pushing for more, striving for more. That's a part of the DNA for coaches, and players say the same things," said Baldwin. "So, if they say, 'Yeah, I am where I'm supposed to be,' it's like, 'No, we've got to get a lot better.' I love the direction we're going. Let's put it that way."
Positional drills and some live action were a part of Saturday's practice session, the fifth of 15 planned for Spring Camp. Cal Poly practices every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday plus one Friday (April 22) prior to the Spring Game.
