SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly will defend the title and serve as host when the 2022 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship begins a three-day run Sunday at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs claimed their second Big West crown a year ago at the Yorba Linda Country Club, edging runner-up UC Davis by two strokes. Long Beach State was third, another two shots back.
"We will have some great competition to challenge us in our attempt to keep the trophy in San Luis Obispo," said Aagaard. "Hawai'i has had a great spring season, winning most recently three weeks ago in Fresno. UC Irvine has fire power, as seen in Fresno as well with under par rounds. There is a good chance it will be a battle all the way to the last hole on day three, the way a great championship should be!"
Among the nine teams in the field for the three-day event, Cal Poly has the highest Golfstat.com ranking at No. 68, followed by Hawai'i at No. 80, UC Riverside at 118th and Long Beach State at 126th.
First tee time for all three days of the championship is set for 7:30 a.m. from the first tee. The top three seeded teams will tee off first.
Cal Poly is hosting the Big West Championship for the first time since 2009. The course underwent major renovations in 2020-21, adding new shapes, rolled turf edges and significantly improving drainage under the direction of golf course architect Todd Eckenrode. The location features picturesque views, pure and undulating greens, white sand bunkers and laser-leveled tee boxes for a memorable golf experience.
In addition to the 2021 title and a berth in the NCAA Stanford Regional, Cal Poly also claimed the Big West crown in 2017, edging UC Riverside by one stroke, on its way to the NCAA Albuquerque Regional.
The Mustangs have been idle since placing fifth in the Fresno State Invitational on March 22 at the Belmont Country Club. Cal Poly won back-to-back tournaments in Highlands Ranch (Ron Moore Intercollegiate) and Fort Collins (Ptarmigan Ram Classic), both in Colorado in October.
"In practice, we have been focusing extra on green reading and course management/strategy execution with approach shots to place the ball in the good spots on the greens," said Aagaard. "There have been lots of competitive drills in practice to keep the energy going and to show up on April 10 with confidence and a winner's attitude."
Last year's individual title went to Long Beach State's Holland Shourds by one stroke over Cal Poly's Caroline Cantlay and UC Irvine's Megan Yang. Shourds carded rounds of 70, 73 and 71 for a 214 total, making her the third straight Long Beach State golfer to win top medalist honors.
Shourds has graduated, but Cantlay and Yang both return for the championship along with Angelina Kim of Long Beach State, Vanessa Betancourt of UC Riverside and Andrea Gomez Lloret of UC Davis, all of whom shared fourth place in the 2021 event.
In addition to Cantlay, a senior, Cal Poly will be represented by senior Elizabeth Scholtes, junior Jensen Jalufka and freshmen Kamille Dimayuga and Kaylyn Noh. Senior Vanessa Wang is an alternate.
Noh is Cal Poly's No. 1 golfer in scoring with a 73.5 average over 21 rounds with five top-20 finishes and eight rounds of par or better, including five rounds in the 60s. Noh finished second in both Colorado events and was fourth in the Hobble Creek Fall Classic.
Scholtes and Cantlay both are averaging 74.0 strokes per round. Scholtes, who did not play in the fall, won the spring opener, the Valley Invitational in Bakersfield, while Cantlay's best finish was a tie for sixth place in the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.
Dimayuga sports a 74.6 scoring average with a pair of top-10 finishes while Jalufka averages 74.7 strokes per round with four top-20 finishes in her last five tournaments.
The 45 players will play a practice round Saturday with a 1 p.m. shotgun start followed by a welcome dinner in the main dining room at the course.
Live scoring will be available, with a link at the top of the page.
