SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After finishing the regular season with the program's most wins since 2011, the Cal Poly women's tennis team will head to San Diego this week for the Big West Conference Tournament looking to win it for the first time since 2003.
The Mustangs (15-6), who head into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, will take on Long Beach State in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament on Thursday, April 28 at 12 p.m. from the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
This is the first time since 2011 that the Mustangs are the No. 2 seed in the tournament. In last year's tournament as the No. 3 seed, Cal Poly made it to the championship match for the first time since 2007, falling to UCSB in the final.
This season, the Mustangs defeated Long Beach State, 4-0, for the first time in more than fifteen years. Long Beach State, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, is 9-10 this season.
At the No. 6 singles spot, freshman Peyton Dunkle is a team-best 14-3. No. 1 singles player, Kim Bhunu, No. 3, Melissa LaMette, and No. 5 Delanie Dunkle are all 12-7.
Cal Poly's doubles teams had an impressive regular season. At the No. 3 spot, freshman Peyton and graduate student Laura Bente are 9-1. Redshirt junior's Emily Ackerman and Bhunu are 14-6 at the No. 1 spot. Redshirt sophomore's LaMette and Delanie are 10-4 at the No. spot.
If the Mustangs win on Thursday, they will play winner of Hawaii and CSUN in the semifinals on Friday, April 29 at noon.
