Mustangs Take Down Long Beach State to Advance to Semifinals of Big West Tournament

SAN DIEGO — No. 73 Cal Poly women's tennis took down Long Beach State 4-1 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament to advance to Friday's semifinals match.
The Mustangs started off the match by taking the doubles point. After Long Beach State's No. 1 tandem won first, the No. 2 pairing of redshirt sophomores Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette (11-4) won 6-3. Graduate student Laura Bente and freshman Peyton Dunkle (10-1) then clinched the point after winning shortly thereafter 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.
At No. 6 spot, Peyton Dunkle (15-3) took the first singles point 6-2, 6-2 to put the Mustangs ahead 2-0. LaMette (13-7) then won her match at the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1 to push the lead to 3-0.
LBSU won a point at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-3 to get on the board. However, a short time later redshirt junior Emily Ackerman (9-12) clinched the match for the Mustangs after she won at the No. 4 spot in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
The No. 2 seed Mustangs will face No. 3 seed Hawai'i Friday at noon. The Rainbow Wahine beat CSUN in their quarterfinal matchup Thursday 4-0. Cal Poly defeated Hawaii earlier this season in San Luis Obispo, 5-2
If the Mustangs win, they will advance to play in the championship match Saturday, April 30 at noon against the winner of UCSB and Cal State Fullerton.
