Mustangs Fall Just Short Against UCSB in Battle for Big West Regular Season Title

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Competing for the right to win the Big West regular season title outright, the No. 65 Cal Poly women's tennis team's battle came up just short Saturday against No. 25 UCSB, falling to the Gauchos 4-1 in the finale of the regular season at Mustang Tennis Complex.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs (15-6, 8-1 BWC) still finished the regular season with their most wins since 2011. They also finished second place in the Big West regular season standings, their highest finish since tying for first in 2011.
The No. 25 Gauchos (17-6, 9-0 BWC) started the match taking the doubles point after collecting wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
In singles, UCSB took a 2-0 lead after winning at the No. 4 spot. Cal Poly freshman continued her strong rookie campaign after winning at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-1, to put the Mustangs on the board. She ends the regular season with a team-best record of 14-3, including a perfect 6-0 record against Big West opponents.
The Gauchos took a 3-1 lead after winning at the No. 5 spot. Despite pushing UCSB in the other three matches, the Gauchos were able to pull out a three-set win at the No. 3 spot to clinch the dual.
Cal Poly will now start preparing for next weekend's Big West Tournament in San Diego. The Mustangs will be the No. 2 seed and play their first match Thursday at noon with their opponent to be decided at the conclusion of Sunday's Big West matches.
