Cal Poly Dominates Mustang Invitational with Nearly 20 Personal Bests

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Three Cal Poly track and field athletes etched their names on the Top 10 list of all-time Mustang marks and 17 new personal bests were set as the Mustangs won the vast majority of events at the Mustang Invitational on Friday at the Miller and Capriotti Athletics Complex.
Elliott Payne added more than 21 feet to his career-best men's javelin mark with a throw of 206 feet, 1 inch for first place and the No. 10 spot on Cal Poly's all-time list.
On the women's side, Karina Moreland won the triple jump at 40-5.25, ninth on Cal Poly's all-time list for the event, while Isabella Rigby added almost five feet to her personal best, winning the discus with a mark of 167-11.25.
In the men's pole vault, Mathis Bresko cleared 17-2.5 for first place, adding two inches to his previous career best set at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational three weeks ago, and Christian Valles was second with a career best as well, climbing 16-10.75.
Hunter Matys won the long jump with a personal-best 22-10.25 and was third in the 100 with a season-best time of 10.97 seconds.
Brandon Dick won the discus at 158-1.5 while Devon Cetti was third, adding 23 feet to his previous personal best with a mark of 149-5.5. Cetti also placed second in the hammer at 193-3.5.
Other men's personal bests were set by Nick Betchart in the shot put (first, 55-2.75), Joey Souto in the 400 (first, 49.,36), Aidan McCarthy in the 800 (first, 1:51.31), Lucas Lacambra in the 800 (third, 1:53.23) and Jonathan Chagnon in the 200 (second, 21.95).
Tyler Esteves was a double-event winner, taking the 100 in a season-best 10.73 seconds and the 200 in 21.92, also a season best.
In other women's events, Rigby added a first in the shot put (personal-best 42-7) to her discus win while Nina St. John was second in the 1,500 with a career-best 4:41.32.
Shimona Draper won the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 14.52 while Jadyn Snaer was second in the 100 with a career-best 12.05.
Makayla Oliver won the 200 with a personal-best 24.98 while season-best marks were earned by Misty Diaz in the 800 (first, 2:09.94) and Shelby Daniele in the 200 (second, 25.01).
A moment of silence was observed for Mark Conover, Cal Poly's director of track and field and cross country for 13 years and a head coach for 25 seasons who passed away April 6.
Cal Poly returns to action April 30 at the Fresno State Invitational in Clovis.
