Cal Poly Posts Numerous Personal Bests, Top-5 Finishes in Clovis

CLOVIS, Calif. -- Cal Poly men's and women's track and field athletes earned eight top-five finishes and a dozen personal-best marks were set at the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Quinton Alexander led a 2-4-6 Mustang finish in the men's 800 with a season-best time of 1 minute, :51.98 seconds. He was followed by fourth-place Mason Elefant in a season-best 1:52.83 and sixth-place Charlie Gordon in 1:54.76.
Another second-place Mustang finish was earned by Christian Valles in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 8 inches. Mathis Bresko also climbed 16-8 for third place.
Anthony Guerra placed third in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.02 while Aidan McCarthy lowered his personal-best time to 3:44.20 for third place in the men's invitational 1,500-meter run.
Kevin Schmitt finished fifth in the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 190-8.
In women's events, Melody Nwagwu placed sixth in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 40-0 while Emily Navarro finished sixth in the javelin at 144-10.
Other Mustangs who earned personal-best times or marks in women's events include Anna Grexton in the hammer (155-9), Roxanne Nolan in the pole vault (12-5.5), Shimona Draper in the 100 hurdles (14.37) and 400 hurdles (1:01.86) and Nina St. John in the steeplechase (11:28.26). Sierra Brill lowered her best mark for the season in the 5,000 to 17:02.90.
In men's events, personal bests were recorded by Nick Gammal in the javelin (183-6), Noah Bustos in the long jump (22-10.5) and Jonathan Chagnon (53.35) and Joey Souto (53.61) in the 400 hurdles. Jake Ritter lowered his season-best mark in the 5,000 to 14:00.67 for eighth place.
At Warmerdam Field on Friday, Emily Hallett placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 198-8.
Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Conference heptathlon and decathlon events Friday and Saturday at UC Davis. The track and field finals are slated for May 13-14, also at Woody Wilson Track.
