Mustangs Blank Long Beach St., Stretch Win Streak to Six

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis kept things rolling Friday, capturing its fifth shutout in a row, and extending its win streak to six straight after a 4-0 win over visiting Long Beach State. The win not only keeps the Mustangs (11-4, 4-0 BWC) undefeated in conference play and 7-0 at Mustang Tennis Complex, it was also the first time Cal Poly has beat Long Beach State in over 15 years. Just as the Mustangs have done in every match during this winning streak, Cal Poly started off the match taking the doubles point over the Beach (8-7, 3-2 BWC). The No. 3 pairing of graduate Laura Bente and freshman Peyton Dunkle started things off with a 6-1 win before the No. 2 duo of redshirt sophomores Melissa LaMette and Delanie Dunkle clinched the point after getting a 6-3 win. Bente and Peyton Dunkle are now a perfect 5-0 together in doubles while LaMette and Delanie Dunkle improved to 7-3. Once singles play got underway, redshirt junior Emily Ackerman made quick work of Claire Le Du at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-2. She has now won three straight matches to get her record to 6-8. Fellow redshirt junior Kim Bhunu was not far behind Ackerman as she also had a strong performance at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Nikola Homolkova. Bhunu has now won six consecutive singles matches to push her record to 9-5. LaMette proved to be the dual-clinching win as she beat Sheena Masuda in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (3) to seal the victory for Cal Poly. LaMette also now has a 9-5 record this season and has won three straight matches. The Mustangs will now prepare to take on No. 73 Hawai'i (8-5, 5-1 BWC) Sunday at 12 p.m. from Mustang Tennis Complex.
