Mustangs Take Down No. 75 Hawai’i, Extend Win Streak to Seven

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team is in the midst of playing its best tennis of the season right now and that continued Sunday as the Mustangs took down No. 75 Hawai'i at home, 5-2, to extend their winning streak to seven straight and remain atop the Big West standings. The win for the Mustangs (12-4, 5-0 BWC) keeps them unbeaten so far in conference play at 5-0, two matches ahead of UC Santa Barbara who is 3-0. It is also their second win this year against a team ranked inside the top-75. Playing at home has proven to be where the Mustangs are most comfortable as they are 8-0 at Mustang Tennis Complex this season. Cal Poly started the match off by taking the doubles point over the Rainbow Wahine (8-7, 5-2 BWC). The No. 2 pairing of redshirt sophomores Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette had a dominant 6-0 win to improve their record to 8-3 together this year. The No. 3 duo of graduate Laura Bente and freshman Peyton Dunkle then clinched the point for the Mustangs after winning 6-1 to remain undefeated together this season at 6-0. In singles, Bente quickly put Cal Poly ahead 2-0 after a straight sets win at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, LaMette was victorious in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. LaMette has now won four straight matches and is 10-5 this season, tied for the most singles wins on the team. Peyton Dunkle (pictured) then clinched the dual for Cal Poly after she won her match at the No. 6 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. She's now won her last six matches and is 10-2 so far in her rookie campaign, tied with LaMette for the most singles wins. Also picking up her sixth consecutive singles win was Delanie Dunkle, who battled to get a three-set comeback win at the No. 5 spot, 6-7(2), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) to push her record to 8-6 this year. Up next for Cal Poly is a home contest against UC Riverside on Friday, April 8 at 11 a.m.
