Mustangs Earn Home Shutout Victory Over BYU Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing four road matches last week, the Cal Poly men's tennis team returned home Saturday to shutout visiting BYU, 4-0, at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (8-3) took the doubles point to start off the match. Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of redshirt sophomore Joe Leather and senior Hendrik Inno collected a 6-2 win to get the Mustangs going. The doubles point was clinched by the No. 3 pairing of sophomore Noah Berry and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca after they won their match, 6-3.
Leather and Inno are now a team-best 6-3 so far this season together at the No. 1 spot. Berry and Fonseca meanwhile are 5-2 and are on a three-match win streak.
In singles, redshirt sophomore Colter Smith gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot to improve his record to 4-3 on the year.
Redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan then put Cal Poly ahead 3-0 after making quick work of his opponent at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Vardanyan is now 6-3 in singles this year.
The dual was later clinched for the Mustangs after Leather won his match in three sets at the No. 2 spot, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2. He now has a 7-1 record on the season and has won six consecutive matches.
The Mustangs will be off until Saturday, March 12 when they host Utah State at noon from Mustang Tennis Complex.
