Cal Poly Takes Down Utah State at Home Saturday, 4-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Continuing its strong play at home this season, the Cal Poly men's tennis team defeated Utah State Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex, 4-3, to improve its record at home to 7-1 this year and 9-3 overall.
The No. 67 Mustangs started off the match taking the doubles point over the Aggies. Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca and sophomore Noah Berry got things going with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot for their fourth consecutive win to improve to 6-2 together.
The No. 2 duo of redshirt sophomore Colter Smith and freshman Bastiaan Weststrate clinched the doubles point after getting a 7-5 win to push their record to 6-3 this year.
In singles, Utah State got the first victory at the No. 2 spot to tie the dual before Smith won his match at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 6-2 to regain the lead for Cal Poly. He is now 5-3 in his first season with the Mustangs.
The Aggies tied it 2-2 after a win at the No. 5 spot. The Mustangs took the lead back after Fonseca was victorious at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
Redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan then clinched the dual for Cal Poly after he pulled off a three-set win at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Vardanyan now holds a 7-3 record this year.
The Mustangs will head to Berkeley for their next match to face Cal on Sunday, March 20 at 5 p.m. for the first of four-match road stretch.
