Liu, Draper Lead Cal Poly to Third-Place Finish in Spring Opener

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. -- Will Draper fired a final-round 68, one stroke shy of his career best, and Austin Liu earned his highest career finish as Cal Poly opened the spring portion of its 2021-22 men's golf schedule with a third-place finish in the Orange County Collegiate Classic.
Draper climbed from a tie for 26th place into a two-way tie for ninth with Harry Doig of Cal State Fullerton by carding six birdies and two bogeys on the 6,950-yard par-72 Coto de Caza South Course on Tuesday.
Liu, whose previous best collegiate finishes were sixth and seven place, both in his second year at Cal Poly, kicked off his fourth Mustang season with rounds of 79, 69 and 72 and finished in a four-way tie for fifth place with a four-over-par 220 total.
Liu was tied for 34th place after his opening-round 79 but rebounded with a 69 Monday afternoon, finishing his first 36 holes of play in 10th place. The Oak Park High School graduate climbed five more notches on the leaderboard Tuesday.
Also finishing in the top 20 for Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs were Baron Szeto and Joey Zambri.
Szeto, the first-round leader, added a 78 to his rounds of 68 and 77, finishing in 14th place with a seven-over-par 223 total. Zambri, competing as an individual, carded a final-round 74 to stay in a tie for 18th place with a 225 aggregate.
Cal Poly's other two scoring golfers were Nicholas Mok with a 76 for a 230 total and 31st place and Drew Kim with a 77 for a 232 total and 36th place.
The Mustangs' four-person 293 total equalled that of team champion Cal State Fullerton. The Titans posted a 17-over-par 881 total, five shots ahead of runner-up UC Irvine and seven in front of Cal Poly.
Individual champion Kolbe Irei of UC Irvine finished with an even-par 216 total following his final-round 73. Anteater teammate Darien Zhao shared second place with Jack Rahon and Nathan Cogswell, both of Seattle. All posted 219 aggregates. Four other golfers, including Liu, were at 220.
Zambri led all golfers by at least four strokes in par-3 scoring at three under par while Draper was second in par-4 scoring at one over par. Szeto shared fourth place with two other golfers in par-5 scoring at five under par.
Szeto's 12 birdies over 54 holes were tied for the No. 5 spot while Draper's 33 pars were fourth in the field of 63 golfers.
Cal Poly heads back south to compete in The Prestige hosted by UC Davis on Feb. 21-23 on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.
