Mustangs Push Win Streak to Five With Road Victory Over UNLV

LAS VEGAS — The Cal Poly men's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2022 season Wednesday by picking up a 5-2 road win over UNLV to extend its winning streak to five matches.Joe Leather got the Mustangs on the board after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Zac Brodney at the No. 2 spot. Leather has won his last four singles matches and is now 5-1 on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith then tied the dual after a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jordan Sauer at the No. 3 spot to improve his record to 3-2 so far this season.
Sophomore Noah Berry continued his perfect start to the season with one of the biggest wins of his career, beating No. 48 Christopher Bulus 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 at the No.1 spot to put the Mustangs ahead 3-2. Berry is now 7-0 this season.
Redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca later clinched the dual for Cal Poly after he had a three set comeback win over Milos Dabic at the No. 4 spot 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan made it a 5-2 final for the Mustangs after he picked up a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot over Tom Ciszewski to win his fourth straight singles match and improve his record to 5-1.
Cal Poly will now head to Tempe, Ariz. to compete in a three-day tournament hosted by Arizona State. The Mustangs will start that tournament by facing the University of South Florida Friday at 10 a.m.
The Mustangs (6-1) were able to defeat the Rebels (4-4) despite UNLV taking the doubles point thanks to stellar singles play.
