Second-Half Comeback Comes Up Short Tuesday for Cal Poly
2/22/2022 9:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior guard Trevon Taylor (above) finished with a game high 14 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after overturning an early double-digit, second-half deficit against CSU Bakersfield Tuesday evening – was undone in the final seconds, falling inside Mott Athletics Center, 61-60.
Junior forward Alimamy Koroma added 10 points for Cal Poly (5-19, 1-11), which trailed CSU Bakersfield (7-15, 2-10) by 11 early in the second half before securing its final lead of the night with three minutes remaining. With Cal Poly in possession, the matchup tied at 60-60 and 10 seconds to play, however, Mustang forward Brantly Stevenson dribbled the ball out of bounds.
Driving the lane for a potential game-winning layup at the opposite end, Roadrunners guard Kaleb Higgins was fouled by Mustang sophomore point guard Camren Pierce. Higgins missed his first attempt off the back iron, but sank the second and Cal Poly failed to get an attempt off in the final seconds.
Hosting CSU Bakersfield for the first time as a Big West Conference opponent, Cal Poly received nine points apiece from Stevenson and sophomore forward Kyle Colvin. Stevenson added eight rebounds while Pierce produced seven assists.
Cal Poly plays its final road game of the regular season when visiting Hawai'i on Thursday, Feb. 24. Tip time is 9 p.m. PT (7 p.m. HT).
During Tuesday's matchup, Cal Poly led CSU Bakersfield for the opening 11 minutes until two free throws from Roadrunners guard Justin McCall handed the visitors a 17-16 advantage. CSU Bakersfield then closed the opening half with a 13-6 run as Cal Poly – kept to a 28.6 (8-for-28) percent field goal mark in the opening period – faced a 30-22 deficit at the break.
A three-pointer from CSU Bakersfield guard Dalph Panopio to open the second half helped the Roadrunners match their largest lead of the evening at 11 points.
Still facing a 43-33 disadvantage with 14 minutes to go, however, Cal Poly enjoyed a Stevenson three-pointer before Colvin sank a jumper and Pierce produced a layup to trim CSU Bakersfield's lead to 43-40.
The Mustangs twice cut their deficit to a single point before a Stevenson jumper with nine-and-a-half minutes to play handed the hosts a brief 46-45 lead.
Wresting back the lead through two free throws by forward Shawn Stith, CSU Bakersfield was able to carve out a 56-51 advantage with just under seven minutes left.
Cal Poly, however, scored on three possessions without reply before two Koroma free throws put the Mustangs up with three minutes to play, 58-56.
