Cal Poly Outdistanced Late at Hawai’i, 63-54
2/24/2022 11:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU – Point guard Camren Pierce (above) scored a game high 15 points and fellow sophomore Brantly Stevenson finished with 14, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after erasing a double-digit, first-half deficit and tying Thursday's matchup against Hawai'i with three-and-a-half minutes remaining – fell inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, 63-54
Junior guard Trevon Taylor added a game best seven rebounds for Cal Poly (5-20, 1-12), which trailed by as much as 11 points during the first half, led by five midway through the second half, but failed to score for the final three-and-a-half minutes after tying the matchup at 54-54.
During a contest that featured 10 lead changes, Cal Poly – playing just its third game outside of California this season and first away from the Pacific Time Zone – shot 52.2 (12-for-23) percent during the second half. The Mustangs, however, were forced into 18 turnovers.
Cal Poly returns home for its final two regular season games, hosting UC Irvine (Thursday, March 3) and UC San Diego (Saturday, March 5). Both games tip at 7 p.m.
During Thursday's matchup, a three-pointer from Hawai'i forward Jerome Desrosiers provided the hosts a 13-3 lead after six minutes.
Still trailing 17-6 with 12 minutes remaining in the half, however, Cal Poly received a jumper and three-pointer from sophomore forward Kyle Colvin on successive possessions to kickstart a 14-2 run. With Pierce sinking two free throws, Cal Poly grabbed a brief 20-19 lead six minutes before the break.
The advantage changed hands three more times before the Rainbow Warriors took a 28-27 edge into halftime after Cal Poly sophomore guard Kobe Sanders connected on a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
A Stevenson jumper 99 seconds into the second half helped Cal Poly regain the advantage. The lead switched five times in the next 14 minutes with neither side able to carve out more than a five-point edge.
Facing a 54-49 gap with three-and-a-half minutes to go, Cal Poly received jumpers from Pierce and Stevenson before junior forward Alimamy Koroma added a free throw to tie the scoreline.
Desrosiers, however, sank a three-pointer two possessions later before a jumper from guard Jovon McClanahan handed Hawai'i a 60-54 lead with 26 seconds left. With Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession, the Rainbow Warriors knocked down three of four free throw attempts to keep Cal Poly at distance.
