Koroma Sets New Career Scoring High, but Cal Poly Falls at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE – Junior forward Alimamy Koroma (above) chalked up his fourth career double-double and third of the season with a collegiate best 26 points and 11 rebounds Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program sustained a 78-58 loss to UC Riverside inside the SRC Arena.
Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson added 13 points for Cal Poly (5-18, 1-10), which – playing its 400th Big West Conference game – trailed UC Riverside (14-9, 7-4) wire-to-wire. The Highlanders, who furthered their winning streak versus Cal Poly to six games, shot 59.3 (32-for-54) percent from the floor.
Koroma, whose previous career scoring best was a 23-point performance versus Nicholls State (Nov. 22), finished 10-for-14 from the floor. Aside from a new career high for field goals, Koroma knocked down a collegiate best four three-pointers.
Guard Camren Pierce grabbed a collegiate best seven rebounds for Cal Poly while fellow sophomore Kobe Sanders produced a career high five assists.
Playing three of its final four games at home inside Mott Athletics Center, Cal Poly next hosts CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
During Saturday's matchup, UC Riverside – which shot 60.7 (17-for-28) percent from the floor during the first half – reached a 19-10 advantage nine minutes before the break.
A Koroma hook shot and three-pointer on successive possessions helped Cal Poly cut its deficit to 28-23 with four-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Highlanders, however, closed the half with a 12-5 run and took a 40-28 lead into the locker room.
Cal Poly closed to within single digits of UC Riverside's lead just once the remainder of the game with a Koroma layup cutting the scoreline to 49-41 with 14 minutes to play.
