Cal Poly Outlasts CSUN in Thursday Big West Opener, 67-57

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior guard Kobe Sanders (above) led four Cal Poly men's basketball players in double-digit scoring figures with a season high 17 points Thursday evening as the Mustangs opened Big West Conference play with a 67-57 victory against CSUN inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior forward Alimamy Koroma added 13 points for Cal Poly (7-6, 1-0), which trailed CSUN (3-9, 0-1) twice, never by more than two points and for only 89 total seconds to claim its first Big West opening-night victory in five seasons.
Graduate guard Chance Hunter finished with 11 points for Cal Poly while senior guard Trevon Taylor scored 10 and missed a third career double-double by a solitary rebound.
The Big West's top free shooting program at 75.9 percent, Cal Poly finished 17-for-21 (81.0 percent) from the line Thursday.
Cal Poly resumes action on Saturday, Dec. 31, visiting Hawai'i for the final Division I game of the 2022 calendar year. Tip time from SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center is 7 p.m. PT.

CSUN recovered to tie the scoreline three times midway through the half before Cal Poly snapped a 16-16 deadlock with a Hunter layup. The Mustangs limited CSUN to just two field goals during the final five minutes of the half to take a 28-23 lead into the break.
Backboned by five points from forward Dearon Tucker, CSUN opened the second half with a 9-3 run, taking their final lead of the night at 32-31 following a layup by guard Ethan Igbanugo with 16 minutes to play.
Cal Poly, however, received a Taylor jumper on the ensuing possession to kickstart a 13-0 run and take a 44-32 lead.
The Mustangs led by 12 points three more times, CSUN shortened its deficit to five on three occasions and Cal Poly knocked down five of its final six free throw attempts to preserve the eventual double-digit victory.
