Mustangs Rally in First Half, but Fall New Year's Eve at Hawai'i
12/31/2022 9:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU – Seniors Trevon Taylor and Alimamy Koroma (above) each finished with a team leading 10 points New Year's Eve, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after cutting a 16-point deficit to open Saturday's game at Hawai'i to five at halftime – fell inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, 57-48.
Koroma added a team best six rebounds for Cal Poly (7-7, 1-1), which began the final Division I game of the 2023 calendar year 0-for-11 from the floor before closing the first half with a 9-for-13 performance to trail 27-22 at the break.
Into the second half, a layup from junior guard Kobe Sanders cut Hawaii's lead to 52-48 with two minutes to play. With a chance to extend Hawai'i's advantage late, guard Jovon McClanahan twice missed three-pointers. Koroma, however, missed a layup with 47 seconds to go and with Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession, the Warriors (11-3, 2-0) knocked down five of six free throw attempts.
Playing on New Year's Eve for just the fifth time in program history and first since a 2016 visit to Princeton, Cal Poly kept Hawai'i to a 37.2 (16-for-43) percent field goal mark.
Cal Poly resumes action and opens 2023 on Thursday, Jan. 5 with a 7 p.m. matchup at CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly began Saturday's matchup by holding Hawai'i to a 0-for-3 shooting start before the Warriors knocked down their next three attempts – including a three-pointer from forward Kamaka Hepa – and converted seven of eight free throw opportunities to go up 12-0 after six minutes.
The Warriors eventually stretched the lead to 16-0 and kept Cal Poly to the 0-for-11 start from the floor before graduate guard Nick Fleming got the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a jumper after nine minutes.
The Mustangs, however, knocked down five of their next seven attempts with a dunk from junior forward Bryan Penn-Johnson cutting Cal Poly's deficit to single digits with five-and-a-half minutes remaining before the break.
Cal Poly then closed the half by limiting Hawai'i to a single field goal with two free throws from junior guard Brantly Stevenson and jumpers by Sanders and sophomore guard Aidan Prukop trimming Hawai'i's halftime lead to 27-22.
Hepa completed a three-point play to open the second-half scoring, Stevenson responded with a jumper and Cal Poly moved within six points of Hawai'i's lead five more times until the layup from Sanders brought Cal Poly within four late.
