Cal Poly Comes Up Short in Big West Semifinals
11/3/2022 10:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Top-seeded Cal Poly women's soccer saw its season come to an end Thursday night with a 1-0 loss to No. 4 Long Beach State in the semifinals of The Big West Championships.
It didn't end the way the Mustangs (9-7-3) had hoped, but head coach Alex Crozier said the 2022 Big West regular season champs shouldn't hang their heads because they had an incredible season.
"This is a special group," Crozier said. "We grew a lot over the season. We played some really tough games early on, took our lumps and kind of found a rhythm that got us through conference play. I thought we did a great job this year. It's tough to lose your last game, but overall I'm really proud of this group."
Cal Poly outshot LBSU 14-11, including 11-5 in the second half, but a 62nd-minute goal from sophomore Summer Laskey allowed the Beach to advance to the conference championship match against No. 6 UC Irvine at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field presented by Dignity Health.
"It was one of those games were one break, one goal and that's the difference, and that's the way it was," Crozier said. "We did have some good looks, the keeper made some good saves, it just didn't work out."
In the 12th minute, senior Monserrat Hernandez Marquez blasted a shot just wide of the left post. About 20 minutes later, senior midfielder Camille Lafaix played a perfect cross into the box and freshman midfielder Brennan Cole fired a header on net that was saved by Long Beach goalkeeper Zora Standifer.
After LBSU's goal, the Mustangs came right back a minute later and nearly equalized. Lafaix, the back-to-back Big West Midfielder of the Year, earned a dangerous shot on goal in front of the net and had a back heel attempt blocked before Long Beach cleared the ball.
Senior defender Kylie Rojas fired a shot on goal in the 72nd minute, and senior midfielder Megan Hansen and Hernandez Marquez earned quality looks at the net down the stretch for the Mustangs.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel secured five saves. The Big West Goalkeeper of the Year finished the season with nine clean sheets, tying her with two other Cal Poly keepers for the third most shutouts in a single season in program history.
As a team, Cal Poly posted 10 shutouts this fall, their most since recording 11 in 2009, and grabbed at least a share of The Big West regular season crown for the second straight season. This was also the first time since 2014 that the Mustangs hosted the conference tournament.
Crozier said he will miss this group of seniors because of how much they cared for one another and the example they set. He also added the future is very bright for the Cal Poly women's soccer program.
"They enjoyed being around each other," he said, "and if you have that it helps a lot, and it just makes you that much better because they're playing for each other, not necessarily for themselves. They all bought in, and they were fun to coach and enjoyable to watch."
