Late Comeback Falls Short as Cal Poly Falls to Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Collin Robbins kicked a 40-yard field goal with 1:27 to play, lifting Northern Arizona to a 31-29 victory over Cal Poly in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday afternoon inside Walkup Skydome.
Coach Beau Baldwin's Mustangs, who held the lead three times in the game, took a 29-28 lead with 4:18 to go on a 27-yard field goal by Jaden Ohlsen. The Lumberjacks then drove 52 yards on eight plays to set up what proved to be the game-winner.
Cal Poly marched to the NAU 39-yard line in the final seconds before four incomplete passes sealed the Mustangs' fate.
Cal Poly falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in Big Sky games while Northern Arizona improved to 2-4 and 1-2.
Mustang quarterback Spencer Brasch completed 29 of 51 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns while his counterpart, Northern Arizona's RJ Martinez, connected on 31 of 44 attempts for 359 yards and three scores of his own.
Cal Poly tight end Josh Cuevas caught eight passes for 93 yards and a pair of touchdowns, all career highs. Chris Coleman caught the other scoring pass from Brasch and finished with five catches for 112 yards. Freshman Bryson Allen also had five catches.
Adam Garwood gained 86 yards on 17 rushes and scored Cal Poly's first touchdown of the game. Brasch hit Coleman with a 44-yard pass and Garwood with an 18-yard strike to set up Garwood's seven-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game.
Northern Arizona scored twice on passes from Martinez to Draycen Hall (30 yards) and Glaspie (three yards) for a 14-6 lead before the Mustangs got back on the scoreboard with 10:15 left in the second quarter.
Brasch set up the score with a 34-yard pass to Coleman down the right sideline, then found Coleman open again, this time over the middle, for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Cal Poly regained the lead, 20-14, when Brasch hit Cuevas over the middle in the back of the end zone on a 15-yard scoring pass with 1:59 to play in the first half.
That was enough time for Northern Arizona to march 90 yards for a touchdown for the second time in the first half. Martinez capped the drive with a one-yard run dive over left guard and a 21-20 Lumberjack lead at the break.
Cal Poly had been outscored 56-7 in the first quarter and 80-21 in the first half in its first four games this season.
Martinez hit Huxton Johnson with a 73-yard touchdown pass and run for a 28-20 Northern Arizona lead. Cal Poly closed the gap to 28-26 on a 31-yard pass over the middle from Brasch to Cuevas midway through the fourth quarter.
Ohlsen then gave Cal Poly a 29-28 lead with 4:18 to be played and Northern Arizona countered with Robbins' game-winner.
Brian Dukes led Cal Poly's defense with 11 tackles and David Meyer added 10. Drew Sulick and Elijah Ponder each recorded sacks for the Mustangs and Dylan Wyatt earned a tackle, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, all on one play, to set up Cal Poly's last-minute drive which fell short.
Cal Poly plays another Big Sky game on the road next week, visiting Idaho State on Saturday, Oct. 15, with kickoff set for noon Pacific.
