Furious Second-Half Rally Falls Short as Idaho State Wins 40-31

POCATELLO, Idaho -- Trailing by 23 points early in the third quarter, Cal Poly mounted a furious comeback, pulling to within six at 37-31 with 9:05 to play.
Idaho State, however, held Cal Poly on its final three drives and Ian Hershey kicked a 44-yard field goal with two seconds left for a 40-31 victory in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday afternoon inside Holt Arena.
With Cal Poly trailing 37-14, Jaden Ohlsen kicked a career-long 48-yard field goal and Spencer Brasch connected with Adam Garwood on a 13-yard touchdown pass and Zedakiah Centers with a 24-yarder, pulling the Mustangs to within six at 37-31 with 9:05 to play in the game.
Cal Poly got the ball back three times for a potential game-winning drive, but the Mustangs were forced to punt on the first drive and Brasch was intercepted for the third and fourth times on their remaining two drives of the contest.
Idaho State improved to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky games with the win while Cal Poly fell to 1-5 and 0-3.
Cal Poly turned the ball over five times and allowed 293 rushing yards to an Idaho State team that was averaging just 92.5 yards on the ground in its first six games.
Bengal quarterback Hunter Hays completed 17 of 23 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. Xavier Guillory caught five passes, one for a touchdown, and Chedon James and Cyrus Wallace each caught four passes.
Brasch established new career highs for completions (30 in 48 attempts), passing yards (392) and touchdowns through the air (4). Chris Coleman caught seven passes for 86 yards while tight end Josh Cuevas and Centers each caught five passes.
Cuevas, Centers, Garwood and Zion Hall all caught touchdown passes from Brasch.
The Mustang ground game was held to 51 total yards, Garwood netting 28 of them on six carries.
Keoua Kauhi rushed for 80 yards on seven carries, Benjamin Omayebu added 74 yards on 10 trips and Raiden Hunter contributed 57 yards on 13 carries. All scored one touchdown for the Bengals.
David Meyer made nine tackles for Cal Poly and Antonio Vakameilalo and Brian Dukes each made eight stops. Charles Ike had nine stops and two interceptions for Idaho State.
Cal Poly's first scoring drive culminating with a 19-yard pass frtom Brasch to Hall featured 13-yard passes from Brasch to Bryson Allen and Josh Cuevas.
In the third quarter Brasch hit Cuevas on a 19-yard scoring pass. The 75-yard drive saw Brasch complete five of five passes, including a 30-yarder to Shakobe Harper and back-to-back passes to Dominique Thompson, his first two Mustang catches after transferring from Utah.
The 13-yard scoring toss from Brasch to Garwood early in the fourth period completed a 58-yard drive that was kept alive by a 13-yard completion to Zion Hall and a 16-yarder from Brasch to Coleman. The final Mustang touchdown drive, capped by Brasch's 24-yard pass to Centers, was highlighted by a Brasch-to-Cuevas pass spanning 12 yards.
Cal Poly returns home to host Eastern Washington for a Big Sky game on Mustang Family Weekend, Oct. 22, with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
