Mustangs Shine at Cal Fall Invite, Capture Two Consolation Titles

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2022-23 season with a strong showing this weekend at the Cal Fall Invite.

Sophomore Eliza Bates and graduate student Kim Bhunu teamed up to capture the Gold Flight consolation doubles title, while freshman Sasha Ozerets took home the White Flight consolation singles title in her career debut for the Mustangs.

Bates and Bhunu defeated the other Cal Poly pairing in the Gold Flight, made up of freshman Kennedy Buntrock and redshirt junior Melissa LaMette, 8-5 in the championship match to claim their crown.

Ozerets earned a come from behind 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over teammate Misha Berry in the White consolation final.

"The team had a great first weekend," first-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams said. "It was awesome seeing some Mustang versus Mustang consolation finals Sunday. We competed well and are off to a strong start this fall."

After dropping their opening match at the tournament, Bates and Bhunu rolled to three straight victories to finish atop their consolation bracket.

In singles action in the White Flight, Mustangs filled three of the four spots in the consolation semifinals — junior Shreya Ravilla, Ozerets and Berry. Ozerets beat Ravilla 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals to reach the final.

Buntrock also had an impressive run in singles play, advancing to the consolation final in the Gold Flight with wins over opponents from Santa Clara, Cal and Saint Mary's.

Ravilla and her doubles partner, Arianna Capogrosso from San Francisco, made it to the semifinals in the White Flight, while sophomore Peyton Dunkle and redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle reached the consolation semifinals in doubles play in the Blue Flight, the tournament's top flight.

The Mustangs return to action on Oct. 14-18 to compete in the ITA Northwest Regionals at Stanford.
