Bhunu, Dunkle Earn Spots in Round of 32 in Singles Play at Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. — Graduate student Kim Bhunu and sophomore Peyton Dunkle went 2-0 in singles play Friday to advance to the Round of 32 at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford.
Bhunu defeated Fresno State's Cristina Flaquer 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 and Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken 6-1, 6-1 to punch her ticket to the Round of 32, while Peyton Dunkle earned straight set victories over Seattle's Liliya Dimova and Portland State's Nika Beukers.
Redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle and freshman Sasha Ozerets each won their first singles match in the main draw in straight sets before falling in the Round of 64.
In doubles play, two Cal Poly pairings grabbed victories in their first match to move on to the Round of 32. Sisters Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle teamed up to take down Oregon's Uxia Martinez Moral and Madisen Olsen 8-3, while sophomore Eliza Bates and freshman Kennedy Buntrock cruised past a pairing from Fresno State 8-3.
The third day of play at the ITA Northwest Regional starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Dunkle sisters battling a doubles team from Fresno State, and Bates and Buntrock facing the No. 4 ranked pairing of Hannah Viller Moeller and Valentina Ivanov from Cal. Bhunu and Peyton Dunkle will take the stage in main draw singles play, while the rest of the Mustangs that lost on Friday will be in the consolation bracket.
