LaMette Clinches 4-3 Dual Match Victory Over Gonzaga Saturday

EUGENE, Ore. — Redshirt sophomore Melissa LaMette (pictured) came up clutch for the Cal Poly women's tennis team Saturday as she had the match-clinching singles win to propel the Mustangs to a 4-3 win over Gonzaga in Eugene, Ore. Saturday in Cal Poly's first dual of the season.
The Mustangs (1-0) started off the dual by taking the doubles point over the Bulldogs (0-1). After Gonzaga won at the No. 3 doubles spot to start things off, Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of redshirt juniors Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu evened things up with a 6-4 win over Cate Broerman and Kianna Oda. The Mustangs' No. 2 doubles duo of LaMette and redshirt sophomore Delanie Dunkle then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Frederikke Svarre and Caroline Wernli.
In singles, sophomore Shreya Ravilla picked up the first win for the Mustangs from the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Wernli.
After the Bulldogs won on court four to make it 2-1 Mustangs, Cal Poly freshman Peyton Dunkle won her match at the No. 4 spot over Tiegan Aitken in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to push the lead to 3-1. She is now 4-0 to begin the season after winning all three of her singles matches last weekend at the Cal Winter Invite.
From there, Gonzaga collected wins at the Nos. 2 and 1 spots to tie the dual at 3-3 with it all coming down to LaMette at the No. 3 spot. She won the first set 6-1 before the Bulldogs' Kianna Oda won the second set 7-5. In the decisive third set, LaMette cruised to a 6-1 win to seal the dual for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will now get ready for a tough test next week as the Mustangs head to Los Angeles Friday, Jan. 28 to take on No. 5 UCLA as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. From there, they will either face Washington or Denver on Saturday depending on the outcome against the Bruins.
