Mustangs Fall to No. 4 UCLA in Opening Round of ITA Kickoff Weekend

LOS ANGELES — Playing the highest ranked opponent a Cal Poly team has played under head coach Kat Winterhalter, the Cal Poly women's team fell to No. 4 UCLA 4-0 Friday in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament.
The Bruins (1-1) picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots to take the doubles point over the Mustangs (1-1).
In singles, sophomore Shreya Ravilla took the first set 6-1 over UCLA's Caroline Goldberg and was in a tight second set when the match was called after UCLA clinched the win.
The Bruins' No. 2 singles player Elysia Bolton gave UCLA a 2-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-0 win over redshirt junior Emily Ackerman.
UCLA's Elise Wagle pushed the Bruin lead to 3-0 a short time later after a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of redshirt sophomore Delanie Dunkle at the No. 4 position.
Soon after, UCLA's Ava Catanzarite clinched the victory for the Bruins with a 6-1, 6-4 win over freshman Peyton Dunkle at the No. 5 spot. It is Dunkle's first loss this season in singles.
At the time the match was called, redshirt junior Kim Bhunu was in a tight second set at the No. 1 spot against Abbey Forbes, ranked No. 68 in the nation in singles. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore Melissa LaMette was tied 3-3 in the second set with Sasha Vagramov, ranked No. 49 in the country in singles.
Cal Poly will now meet Denver Saturday in the consolation match of the tournament starting at 10 a.m.
