LOS ANGELES — Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers had a career-high 20 kills and two other Mustangs recorded double-figure kills but the Cal Poly volleyball team dropped its Thursday road contest to Loyola Marymount University 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 25-17).
Stivers hit .391 on 46 attacks, committing just two errors while also adding four digs. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips tied her career-high with 14 kills, hitting .500 to go along with three digs and a pair of blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham added 10 kills, hitting .320 to go with three digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (2-8) hit a solid .252 for the match. However, the Lions (8-1) hit .320 and also had nine blocks compared to just three for Cal Poly.
LMU scored the first three points of the first set before the Mustangs responded by scoring the next three to tie it. Trailing 15-13, Cal Poly scored three consecutive points to go up by one. The teams traded points from there until, tied at 23, a service error and an attack error by the Mustangs gave the Lions the two points it needed to win the set 25-23.
Cal Poly responded in the second set by jumping out to a 10-3 lead that included a stretch of scoring six straight points. LMU cut the lead to five at 14-9 before the Mustangs rattled off four points in a row to match its biggest lead of the set at 18-9. The Lions got it back to 21-15 but that is as close as they would get as Cal Poly went on to win the set 25-18.
The third set was back-and-forth early. LMU got out to 6-3 lead before the Mustangs regained the lead after scoring four straight points. Later with LMU up 13-12, a 6-1 run by the Lions stretched their lead to 19-13. At 20-15, LMU finished the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-17.
In the fourth set with Cal Poly leading 7-5, the Lions used a 5-2 run to go ahead 10-9. The teams went back-and-forth from there until tied at 14, LMU went on an 8-1 run to pull away 22-15 before going on to win the set 25-17 to clinch the match.
Kari Geissberger led the Lions on the evening with a double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs. Rose Booth had 13 kills and seven digs and Audrey Klemp added 10 kills.
Cal Poly will look for revenge against LMU when they host the Lions at Mott Athletics Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
