Shotwell Lands on Phil Steele's Preseason All-Big Sky Second Team

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly senior linebacker Matt Shotwell has landed on Phil Steele's 2021 Preseason All-Big Sky Conference second team.
Shotwell has been Cal Poly's leading tackler each of the last three years and enters his final season as a Mustang with 217 career tackles, No. 17 on Cal Poly's career charts. He has made 10 or more tackles in 10 games during his Mustang career.
The Will linebacker and Bishop Diego High School graduate made 34 stops (18 solo) during the Mustangs' abbreviated spring season, including a season-high 14 stops against Eastern Washington.
Shotwell made 89 tackles (57 solo) in 2019 en route to a spot on the All-Big Sky Conference third team and 90 tackles (57 solo) in 2018 on his way to All-Big Sky honorable mention praise. His career high for tackles in a game is 16 in 2018 season finale against Southern Utah.
Shotwell has three career interceptions.
Phil Steele has named Southern Utah offensive lineman Braxton Jones as its preseason Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and Weber State linebacker Tre Walker as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Cal Poly opens its 2021 season Sept. 4 at San Diego. The Mustangs' home opener is Sept. 18 versus South Dakota at 5:05 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
