Hyland Enjoys Longest Olympics Appearance, but Mexico Falls to the United States, 2-0

TOKYO – Former Cal Poly righthander Sierra Hyland tossed one and one-third innings of relief Saturday morning in her lengthiest Olympics appearance to date, but her Mexico National Team fell to the United States at the Tokyo Games, 2-0.Scoreless at Yokohama Stadium through two innings, the United States produced the eventual winning runs in the top of the third through second baseman Ali Aguilar's two-out, two-run single.
Hyland, the Big West Conference's all-time strikeout leader and a two-time NFCA All-America selection at Cal Poly (2014-17), took over for Mexico reliever Danielle O'Toole with two down in the top of the sixth inning. She forced third baseman Kelsey Stewart into a fly out and allowed just a hit in the top of the seventh to preserve Mexico's 2-0 deficit.
Offensively, Mexico was held to one combined hit by Cat Osterman and Monica Abbott.
With Saturday's loss, Mexico (0-3) continued to share the bottom third of the six-team bracket with Italy (defeated by Japan on Saturday, 5-0). Both countries, however, trail Canada (2-1) by two games in the standings and Australia (1-2) by one. Japan and the United States lead the group with 3-0 marks.
The top two countries in the standings will meet in the Tuesday, July 27 gold medal game. Countries finishing third and fourth will play for the bronze medal.
To reach the bronze medal game, Mexico would at least have to win its two remaining matchups: versus Italy on Sunday, July 25 (4 p.m. PT, 8 p.m. local) and against Australia on Monday, July 26 (4 p.m. PT, 8 p.m. local).
