2022-24 BIG SKY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Those Big Sky Conference schedules for the 2020-23 football seasons, released two years ago, can be tossed.
With the impending departure of Southern Utah to the Western Athletic Conference, effective next fall, the Big Sky has completed a six-month process to redraft future football schedules for a 12-team league for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons.
The future schedules will still feature eight league games that include two annual opponents, some of whom have changed since the last time, and six rotating opponents. This format was selected in part based on feedback from the league membership about wanting to make sure teams did not go a long time during the three-year slate without playing a fellow conference opponent.
Cal Poly will continue to play in-state rivals UC Davis and Sacramento State each season
"The Big Sky's new football scheduling model preserves so many of our most historic annual rivalries while ensuring a balanced rotation of playing each conference opponent," Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. "For this three-year scheduling block that begins in 2022, our 12 football programs and their supporters will enjoy knowing that each school will play every other Big Sky school at least twice -– once at home and once on the road -– so each player will have the opportunity to compete in every stadium and each local fanbase will have the chance to see every conference team come to their town."
League schools also had increased input into the scheduling process, with each institution allowed to request their preferred annual opponents (every school got at least one of their requests) and one week per season during which they would like to be home or not at home (either away or open). The nine non-California-based teams will play one game each season at either Cal Poly, Sacramento State, or UC Davis, and will host one of those three every year as well.
In 2022, Cal Poly will host Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, Montana State and Portland State while visiting Northern Arizona, Idaho State, UC Davis and Montana.
The 2023 Mustang Big Sky schedule features UC Davis, Idaho, Northern Colorado and Weber State at home and Portland State, Montana State, Eastern Washington and Sacramento State on the road.
And in 2024, Cal Poly hosts Idaho State, Montana, Northern Arizona and Sacramento State while visiting Northern Colorado, UC Davis, Idaho and Weber State.
Parameters for scheduling include playing an opponent coming off a bye week no more than three times in a season, no more than two consecutive conference games on the road, one of the last two conference games scheduled each season will be at home and one of the first two conference games scheduled each season will be at home as well.
In addition, the UC Davis vs. Sacramento State, Montana vs. Montana State and Idaho vs. Idaho State games will be played in the last week of the season.
