NEW ORLEANS – A total of eight Cal Poly track and field student-athletes -- three men and five women -- as well as both teams have been honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their success in the classroom.
More than 850 men and 1,100 women were named All-Academic Athletes in NCAA Division I.
Cal Poly male student-athletes honored include Dylan Bouzigues (animal science major), Jake Ritter (civil engineering) and Justin Robison (kinesiology).
Robison claimed the Big West 1,500-meter title and finished second in the 5,000 while Ritter placed third in the 10,000 and fourth in the 5,000. Bouzigues finished second in the Big West decathlon.
The five Mustang women who were honored are Emily Hallett (kinesiology), Kayla Myers (business administration), Molly Ross (biological sciences), Julianna Ruotolo (exercise science) and Brooke Tjerrild (kinesiology).
Ross was co-champion in the Big West 100-meter hurdles race and placed second in the 400-meter hurdles. Ruotolo was third in the 400 after capturing the Big West heptathlon crown a week earlier and both ran legs on the winning 1,600-meter relay team.
Tjerrild claimed her third Big West pole vault title and broke school, conference and Big West meet records during the season, topping out at 14 feet. Hallett broke the school record and won the Big West hammer throw and also placed eighth in the javelin while Myers was second in the pole vault.
Under track and field director Mark Conover, Cal Poly's women's team captured its first Big West championship while the men were second.
Criteria for individual honors includes cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, completion of at least two semesters or three quarters at the nominating institution, participation in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and finish the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season.
For the team awards, squads with cumulative grade-point averages at or above 3.0 were honored.
The Cal Poly men's team compiled a 3.17 GPA while the women's squad posted a 3.31 GPA.
The University of San Francisco topped all men's teams with a 3.74 GPA while American University led the women's teams with a 3.80 GPA.
