SAN LUIS OBISPO – CJ Sigler, former Cal Poly men's soccer defender, successful head coach of the university's club program and volunteer assistant with his alma mater, was recently promoted to assistant coach with the Mustang men's soccer program.
"We're incredibly excited to welcome CJ into the assistant coaching role. After working as a volunteer coach, he's truly earned this opportunity to be on campus full-time and help make our program into Big West Conference champions," sixth-year Cal Poly head coach Steve Sampson said. "CJ brings a wealth of experience into this position, including having been a standout center back. We look forward to his continued work on the field with the team, but also in helping us find talent on the recruiting trail.
"I want to congratulate CJ on this milestone in his career and am excited to watch his coaching career blossom with this new opportunity."
Entering the 2021 season with 17 years of coaching experience, Sigler spent the past two as a volunteer with the Cal Poly men's program. Prior, Sigler served as head coach of the university's club program where his teams compiled a 125-23-13 overall record with 445 (2.76 per match) goals scored and just 102 (0.63) conceded. A nationally ranked program under Sigler, the Cal Poly club captured the 2010 NIRSA national championship, finished as national runner-up in 2017 and reached the national semifinals in 2012, quarterfinals in 2011 and round of 16 from 2013-15 and in 2018. The club is also a five-time regional champion (2011-14, 2017) and eight-time regional finalist (2015-16, 2019)
At youth club level, Sigler has coached and developed players for Santa Rosa United (2005-2010) and the Central Coast Eagles and Camarillo Eagles (2010-2014).
Sigler, who started 48 of a possible 51 matches in defense for Cal Poly (2000-02), played three seasons for the Sonoma County Sol (2005-07) of the National Premier Soccer League. In 2005, Sigler helped lead the Sol to a finalist appearance at the NPSL championships while earning selection to All-NPSL XI team at center back. Prior to Cal Poly, Sigler helped San Rosa JC to an appearance in the 1999 CCCAA state tournament.
Sigler, whose younger brother, Patrick, was a four-year letterwinner at Cal Poly (2008-11) and four-time All-Big West Conference selection, completed a B.S. in journalism at Cal Poly (2003) and M.A. in sports management from San Francisco (2010).
