
9 Mustangs Advance to NCAA Track & Field Championship Prelims

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Nine Mustangs will represent Cal Poly in the Preliminary Round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Texas A&M. Dane Clemensen, Emily Hallett, Kayla Myers, Jake Ritter, Justin Robison, Molly Ross, Julianna Ruotolo, Will Smith and Brooke Tjerrild have advanced to the West Regional meet, held from May 26-29 at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
The field, comprised of Top-48 student-athletes per event west of Mississippi, was announced on Thursday.
Qualifiers finishing in the Top 12 per event will advance to join their peers out of the East Region (hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville simultaneous to the western meet) in moving on to Oregon, which hosts the NCAA Finals from June 9-12 at Hayward Field.

Men's Javelin (First Round)
Dane Clemensen, Sr.
Clemensen earned his top mark — 216 feet & 4 inches — at the Spring Break Invitational in Fresno on March 13.
With the throw of 65.93m, he moved up to No. 5 in school history for the event after the mid-'80 re-design of the javelin.
Clemensen added a 10th-place throw at the conference finals on May 13. He's the No. 27 seed heading to Texas.

Men's 10,000 Meters (Semifinals)
Jake Ritter, Jr.
Ritter took over the No. 5 spot on Cal Poly's all-time 10,000m chart at the Sound Running College Invite on April 2, running 29:01.61.
Almost cracking the 29-minute mark, he also went on make his second straight all-conference squad at the distance, tallying third place at the Big West Championships.
Ritter advances seeded 38th in the regional field.

Women's Hammer Throw (First Round)
Emily Hallett, Sr.
Hallett broke her own school record at the Big West Championships on May 13, reaching 193' 0".
She extended her efforts on each of the first trio of attempts consecutively, culminating with the title-winning mark of 58.82m on her third try. While breaking her own program record by a whole foot, Hallett also bettered her season-best release by 2' 9".

Women's Pole Vault (First Round)
Brooke Tjerrild, Jr.
Tjerrild broke both the overall conference pole vault record and Big West Championship Meet records this season. She set the overall conference record (and program mark) on May 1 at the Blue-Green Rivalry Meet, jumping 14' 0" to rank No. 7 in the West Region and No. 16 nationally.
With a height of 4.27m, Tjerrild was selected as BWC Field Athlete of the Week on April 13, 21 & 28, and May 4 — giving her a career total of six certificates, tied for the third-most in conference history for the Women's Field category.
She won her third straight BWC title on May 13, breaking a meet record which had stood for 22 years, winning with a jump of 13' 11" to become first woman in Big West history to win three consecutive conference PV crowns. So far this season, she has seven wins, giving her a career total of 18 overall collegiate victories.
Kayla Myers, Jr.
Myers finished right behind Tjerrild at the Big West Championships on May 13, earning second with a jump of 13' 7".
Myers moved into sole possession of No. 3 all-time among Mustang pole-vaulters, at 4.14m.
Now a two-time all-conference selection, Myers — seeded 29th — continues on in the postseason having cleared at least 13' 2.25" for three consecutive meets.

Women's 100m Hurdles (First Round)
Molly Ross, Sr.
Ross' top time, 13.55 seconds from April 30 at Fresno State's West Coast Relays, ranked No. 1 in the BWC all year.
Ranked 44th in the region — plus third in school history — she went on to earn the co-Big West title via 13.75 on May 15.
She earned three Big West Track Athlete of Week awards in 2021: on March 16, April 13 and May 4, and has posted a combined 11 first-place finishes between either of the hurdles events this spring.
Friday — 1:30 p.m. (CDT), May 28
Men's Discus (First Round)
Will Smith, Sr.
Smith ranks No. 42 throughout the region for the discus, thanks to one of his four first-place finishes during 2021.
He reached 179' 4" at the Wildflower Invitational on April 10 in Fresno, good to rank No. 3 in school history with the mark of 54.66m.
Smith also took third place at the BWC Finals, with a throw of 178' 11". In addition to advancing to the NCAA First Round, Smith is 74th in the national rankings.
Friday — 8:30 p.m. (CDT), May 28
Men's 5,000 Meters (Semifinals)
Justin Robison, Jr.
Robison ran 13:46.80 at the Sound Running College Invite in Irvine on April 2, good for No. 2 in school history while ranking as the fastest 5,000m time around the conference at a college-season meet in the past 16 years.
His effort at Crean Lutheran, ranked 32nd in the region, earned him selection as the Conference Track Athlete of the Week on April 6, after also collecting the accolade for March 30.
Robison went on to add second place in the 5,000m at the Big West Championships, for a total of 18 points scored. (He also won the BWC title for the 1,500m in 3:44.68, the fastest time at the meet since 2012.)
Saturday — 1 p.m. (CDT), May 29
Women's High Jump (First Round)
Julianna Ruotolo, Sr.
Ruotolo picked up a victory by clearing 5' 8.75" at the FPU Spring Break Invitational on March 13.
Following her jump of 1.75m, she earned the silver at the BWC Finals on May 14, clearing 5' 7.25" to add 8 team points to her heptathlon title.
Ruotolo also jumped 5' 8.75" at the Adams-Klein Multis at Westmont in March.
