Mustangs Blank UC Davis 4-0 Friday for Sixth Straight Win

DAVIS, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan (pictured) won both is singles and doubles matches to help the Cal Poly men's tennis team beat UC Davis 4-0 on the road Friday and earn its sixth straight win.
The Mustangs (10-7, 3-0 BWC) were dominant from start to finish. In doubles, the No. 2 duo of redshirt senior Antoine Noel and redshirt junior Andrew Whitehouse won their match in impressive fashion 6-0 to improve to 4-2 together this season. At the No. 3 spot, redshirt junior Alex Stater and redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan then clinched the doubles point after a 6-1 victory. They are now a team-best 7-2 together this year and have won their last five matches.
In singles, redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca first won his match at the No. 5 spot 6-0, 6-2 to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0. He is now 9-7 on the year and 2-1 against Big West opponents.
Vardanyan then gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead after winning his match 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. He now has a 9-6 record and has won his last three matches.
The win was later clinched by redshirt freshman Joe Leather after he won his match at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-3 to push his record to 9-6 this season.
With a 3-0 Big West record, Cal Poly sits atop the conference standings as they head into a road match against UC San Diego on Thursday, April 15 at 10 a.m.
