Mustangs Remain Unbeaten in Conference After Shutout of UC San Diego Thursday

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team stayed hot Thursday, winning its seventh consecutive match and keeping its conference record unblemished after a 4-0 road shutout of Big West foe UC San Diego.
The win pushes the Mustangs' overall record to 11-7 and improves their Big West record to 4-0 and in sole possession of first place in the standings ahead of 3-1 UC Irvine and 3-1 UC Santa Barbara.
Cal Poly started the match by taking the doubles point over the Tritons (0-7, 0-4 BWC). The No. 2 duo of redshirt senior Antoine Noel and redshirt junior Andrew Whitehouse got their match done first, defeating Cody Duong and Neil Tengbumroong 6-1 for their third win in a row and move to 5-2 together this season. The doubles point was then clinched by the No. 3 pair of redshirt junior Alex Stater and redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan 6-2 over Eric Silberman and Marc Isaia. Stater and Vardanyan have now won six matches in a row and are a team-best 8-2 this season.
In singles, redshirt freshman Joe Leather put Cal Poly ahead 2-0 after a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot over Tengbumroong. Leather has now won his last matches and is tied for the second most singles wins on the team thus far at 10-6.
A short time later, freshman Noah Berry won his match at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-2 over Zach Ermert. Berry has also won his last three matches and is now 8-6 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca then clinched the match for the Mustangs after a 7-6(4), 6-2 over Silberman at the No. 5 spot. Fonseca is now tied with Leather for the second most wins on the team at 10-7.
Cal Poly will now head into its final weekend of the regular season looking to win its first Big West regular season championship since 2013. The Mustangs will travel to take on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 10 a.m. then return home to host UC Riverside on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Sunday will also be senior day and the final home match for Antoine Noel, Alex Stater, Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk.
