Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Opens Big West Tournament Thursday

Irvine, Calif. — After recording one of its best regular season's in recent memory, the Cal Poly women's tennis team will head to Irvine this week for the Big West Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
The tournament will take place this year for the first time at Orange County Great Park in Irvine from Thursday, April 29-Saturday, May 1.
The Mustangs, who finished the season with a 12-2 overall record and a 6-2 conference record, will face No. 6 seed CSUN on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
A win would advance Cal Poly into the semifinals on Friday, April 30 at 9 a.m. against the winner of Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.
The Matadors earned the six seed after finishing the regular season with a 7-5 overall record and a 4-4 Big West record. Cal Poly beat CSUN 4-1 when the two faced each other earlier this season in San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly's 12 wins during the regular season are the most the program has had since 2011. The Mustangs have been led in singles this year by Melissa LaMette who has a team-best 12-2 record, Emily Ackerman who has a 11-1 record, and Delanie Dunkle who has a 10-3 record. In doubles, the team has a combined record of 25-8 this year. The pair of Dominique Stone and MacKenzie Wornsop have a record of 8-0, Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu are 8-0 together, and Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette are 8-4 as a duo this season.
The Mustangs are seeking their first conference tournament title since 2003. In the last Big West Tournament in 2019, Cal Poly fell to No. 3 seed Long Beach State in the quarterfinals.
