IRVINE, Calif. — The third-seeded Cal Poly women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded CSUN 4-2 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
Just as they've done in 11 of their 13 wins this year, the Mustangs (13-2) took the doubles point over the Matadors (7-6). Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of redshirt freshman Dominique Stone and redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop started off by winning their match 6-1 over Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian to improve their record together this year to a team-best 9-0. CSUN then won at No. 2 doubles to force it to come down to the Mustangs' No. 1 pair of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu. Bhunu and Ackerman clinched the doubles point after a 7-6(4) win over Ekatarina Repina and Ana Fraile Toboso to also remain unbeaten together this year at 8-0.
Once it moved to singles, Ackerman put the Mustangs ahead 2-0 after she won her match at the No. 5 spot in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Ackerman is now tied for the team-lead in singles wins at 12-1.
After the Matadors cut the lead to 2-1 by winning at the No. 1 spot, Bhunu gave Cal Poly a 3-1 lead after winning her match at the No. 2 position. After dropping the first set 4-6, Bhunu came back to win the next two 6-2, 6-1 to win her match and improve her record to 8-3 this season.
CSUN won at the No. 3 spot to cut the Cal Poly lead to 3-2 before redshirt freshman Delanie Dunkle (pictured) also came back after dropping the first set to win her match in three sets at the No. 4 spot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Mustangs. Dunkle is now 11-3 in singles this season.
