IRVINE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team shutout Cal State Fullerton 4-0 Friday in the Big West Tournament semifinals in Irvine to move on to Saturday's championship match.
It is the first time the Mustangs (14-2) have made it to the finals of the tournament since 2007. The win over the Titans (13-6) avenged a loss to them earlier this season which was Cal Poly's first of the season.
For the 12th time this season, Cal Poly started off the match by taking the doubles point over Cal State Fullerton. After the Titans won at the No. 3 spot, the Mustangs' No. 1 duo of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu beat Misaki Kobayashi and Eira Tobrand 6-3. Cal Poy's No. 2 pairing of redshirt freshmen Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette then clinched the point after a 7-5 win over Camila Garcia and Jadie Acidera.
Bhunu and Ackerman remain unbeaten so far this year and improved their record to a team-best 9-0. Meantime, Dunkle and LaMette improved their record together to 9-5 this year.
In singles, redshirt freshman Dominique Stone made quick work of Kobayashi at the No. 1 spot by winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. She is now 9-4 on the year.
Ackerman then put Cal Poly ahead 3-0 after winning her match at the No. 5 spot over YuSeung Suh 6-2, 6-2. She is now 13-1 in singles this season, tied for the most wins on the team.
The win was later clinched by LaMette after she won her match in straight sets at the No. 3 position over Acidera 7-6(4), 6-1 to improve her record to 13-3, tied with Ackerman for the most singles wins on the team.
The Mustangs will now face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Big West Championship final. The Gauchos beat Cal Poly when the two faced each other on April 17 in Santa Barbara.
