
Mustangs Wrap Regular Season With 4-2 Road Win Over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season Saturday with a 4-2 win on the road over UC Riverside finish the regular season with its most wins since 2011.
The Mustangs (12-2, 6-2 BWC) began the match by taking the doubles point over the Highlanders (0-8, 0-7 BWC). The No. 3 pairing of redshirt junior MacKenzie Worsnop and redshirt freshman Dominique Stone got things started with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot to end the regular season with an 8-0 record together. The point was later clinched by the No. 1 duo of redshirt sophomores Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu, who returned to the lineup after missing the previous four matches, 6-3. They also end the regular season with a perfect record together at 7-0.
In singles, it was Bhunu (pictured) winning her match first at the No. 2 spot 6-1, 6-1 to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0. Bhunu is now 7-3 in singles this season.
Redshirt freshman Delanie Dunkle gave the Mustangs their third point of the match after winning at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-1 to improve her singles record this season to 10-3.
UC Riverside cut the Cal Poly lead to 3-2 after getting wins at both the No. 1 and No. 5 spots in the lineup before redshirt freshman Melissa LaMette clinched the victory at the No. 3 position. She came back after dropping the first set 4-6 to win the next two 6-1, 6-2 and secure the 4-2 win. LaMette ends the regular season a team-best 12-2 in singles.
At 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big West, the Mustangs will head into next week's Big West Tournament as the No. 3 seed. That is the highest Cal Poly has finished in the regular season standings since finishing second in 2011 (excluding the shortened 2020 season). The Mustangs will now prepare for their first round match of the Big West Tournament, which will take place on Thursday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m. at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. against the No. 6 seed which is still to be determined.
