Mustangs Take Down UC Irvine 5-2 For Fifth Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team kept its hot streak going Saturday, beating visiting Big West foe UC Irvine 5-2 at Mustang Tennis Complex to extend its win streak to five matches.
The Mustangs (9-7, 2-0 BWC) started the match by taking the doubles point over the Anteaters (5-5, 0-1 BWC). The No. 2 pairing of senior Antoine Noel and junior Andrew Whitehouse took their match first, winning it 6-2. They are now 3-2 together this season. The doubles point was clinched after the No. 3 duo of junior Alex Stater and sophomore Gary Vardanyan won their match 6-2. They are now a team-best 6-2 together this year and have won their last four matches.
In singles, freshman Noah Berry (pictured) put Cal Poly ahead 2-0 after an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over Jeremy Merville. Berry is now 7-6 on the year, including 6-3 from the No. 2 spot alone.
Noel followed suit a short time later with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Mark Peneff for his second win in as many days.
Vardanyan then clinched the match victory for Cal Poly with a three set comeback win at the No. 6 spot 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Ali Amiri. He is now 8-6 on the year.
The Mustangs' fifth point on the afternoon came from freshman Joe Leather after he won his match at the No. 4 spot over Mateusz Smolicki 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2). Leather is also now 8-6 this season.
Cal Poly will be off next week before traveling to face UC Davis on April 9 at 1:30 p.m.
