Mustangs Defeat Hawai’i 5-2 Friday to Open Big West Play

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt junior Alex Stater won his fourth straight singles match as the Cal Poly men's tennis defeated visiting Hawai'i 5-2 Friday to begin Big West Conference play.
The win is the Mustangs' (8-7, 1-0 BWC) fourth in a row and makes them 1-0 in conference play this season and they did so despite losing the doubles point.
Hawai'i's No. 2 pairing of Blaz Seric and Axel Labrunie first won their match 6-1. Their No. 1 duo of Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie then won their match 6-2 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca quickly tied things up after getting a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot. The win is his fourth consecutive and improves his record to 8-6 this year.
Freshman Noah Berry later gave the Mustangs the lead 2-1 after he picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot. He is now 6-6 in singles play this season.
Redshirt senior Antoine Noel (pictured) then put Cal Poly ahead 3-1 after a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position.
The Rainbow Warriors cut Cal Poly's lead to 3-2 after a win at the No. 4 spot before redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan clinched the match for the Mustangs with a three-set comeback win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. He is now 7-6 in singles this season.
Stater later made is 5-2 Cal Poly after he won his match at the No. 1 spot in comeback fashion 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3. The No. 77 ranked singles player in the country is now a team-best 11-3 this season in singles.
Cal Poly will look for its second Big West win Saturday when welcoming UC Irvine to Mustang Tennis Complex at 12 p.m.
