SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly won 15 events on Wednesday at the Spring Break Track & Field Challenge, highlighting a meet full of PRs during the Mustangs' 2021 home opener at Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
FULL MEET RESULTS
Slightly smaller travel squads than seen in usual seasons, each from CSUN, CSU Bakersfield, Santa Clara and St. Mary's, also attended the meet, which starts three straight days of action for the Mustangs.
PRINTABLE COMPLETE RESULTS
SMITH MOVES UP TO NO. 9 IN SCHOOL HISTORY FOR DISCUS: William Smith won the discus with a throw of 171 feet, 3.5 inches, moving to No. 9 all-time at Cal Poly for the event.
Smith, a senior, is getting closer to a potential NCAA Championship first-round mark, as his throw on Wednesday ranks 28th nationally so far for 2021. (In 2019, the last full track season, the mark would've been about 8 feet back of advancing to the national prelims.)
ROBISON SHATTERS PR IN 1,500M, TOPS IN BIG WEST: The top nationally ranked performance of the day came from Cal Poly redshirt junior Justin Robison, who won the 1,500-meter run in 3:48.65. Suddenly No. 1 in the conference for the event, Robison's time (ranked 11th early on around the country) took almost five seconds off his previous best.
True freshman Colton Swinth also clocked a top-30 national time so far, running 3:50.69 at his very first home meet in college.
ALLISON CLOCKS PR TO HIGHLIGHT BUSY DAY: Chineme Allison won the 100-meter dash for Cal Poly with a new PR of 10.73 seconds. He previously also had a time of 10.73 with wind gauged at +2.2m/s, but on Wednesday, conditions were favorable with wind at +1.2 — helping the time stand up as a BWC Championship Meet qualifier with room to spare.
Tyler Esteves also punched his ticket to the conference meet in May for the dash, taking second place at 10.77 seconds, another PR.
In addition, Allison ran lead-off for the Mustangs' 4x100m relay team, passing the baton to Esteves, who then exchanged with Joey Souto and Hunter Matys, to combine for a time of 41.59. Allison's afternoon actually started a bit earlier at the long jump runway, where he took third with a mark of 22' 0.5", while Matys came in second, at 22' 1.25".
POYNTER, HUBERT ALSO WIN EVENTS IN SEASON-BEST FASHION: Defending conference champion Bobby Poynter posted a season-best in the 800m, winning in 1:51.71, to edge Mason Elefant's 1:52.32 effort. Poynter, a sophomore, ranks No. 15 nationally early on this outdoor season, while Elefant, a freshman, is close at No. 23.
Freshman Cassidy Hubert also continued her strong start to the year, winning her 800m at 2:09.68 (almost a three-second PR). Ranked 16th nationally, she edged teammate Mikaela Romanini's 2:10.48.
BRILL ALSO CRUSHES PR IN 1,500: Sierra Brill cut more than five seconds off her career-best showing in the 1,500 meters, taking a close second in 4:28.08. For now the time also ranks among the top 20 in the country.
ROSS WINS TWICE AGAIN; 4 MORE TEAMMATES ALSO TALLY VICTORIES FOR WOMEN'S SQUAD: The reigning Big West Athlete of the Week, Molly Ross, was again a double-winner on Wednesday. She took the 100m hurdles in 13.77 seconds, and then added a 400m win at 57.82, just ahead of teammate Belle Aduaka (58.41).
Meanwhile on the women's side, Cal Poly also registered wins from Amaya Lopez-Fuller in the discus (with a mark of 146' 8"); Brooke Tjerrild for the pole vault (with a height of 13' 3.5"); Shelby Daniele in the 100-meter dash (12.18); and Natalie Rogers for the shot put (40' 11.25").
3-WAY TIE FOR TOP POLE VAULT SPOT; SALZMAN & CETTI ALSO SCORE WINS FOR MEN'S TEAM: The Mustangs saw a three-way tie for the men's pole vault crown, as Christian Valles, Enzo Sison and Zack Volpe all jumped 16' 0.75".
Simultaneously on the men's side, the Mustangs also recorded victories from both Wesley Salzman (who ran 49.18 for the 400m) and Devon Cetti (who tossed for a mark of 50' 7" in the shot).
