COTO DE CAZA, Calif. — Cal Poly finished third among seven men's golf teams competing in the Orange County Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Coto de Caza South Course.
Making his Mustang coaching debut, Phil Rowe's golfers carded a four-person final-round 299 aggregate to maintain their third-place finish attained after the completion of the second round, which was suspended due to darkness Monday with most golfers having three or four holes to play.
"If spectators had been allowed, supporters would have seen our players delight in putting on the uniforms and competing for Cal Poly for the first time in nearly one year," said Rowe.
San Francisco led from wire to wire for the team victory, posting an even-par 864 total for 54 holes on the 6,950-yard, par-72 layout. Host Cal State Fullerton was second at 876 and Cal Poly posted an 888 aggregate.
Five of the six Mustangs competing in the two-day tournament finished in the top 20.
Top Mustang finisher, Austin Liu, was competing as an individual and carded a 71 Tuesday, the third-best round of the day. He finished with a one-over-par 71 and a tie for sixth place. Liu's round included four birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey.
Nicholas Mok and Luke Adam shared 11th place with one other golfer at 220. Mok recorded a 72 with five birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey while Adam checked in with a final-round 73, his scorecard showing five birdies and six bogeys.
Will Draper posted a 77 for a 223 total and 16th place while Tanner Podres added a 77 for a 225 total and 19th place.
"The Coto de Caza South Course played firm and fast with a few tricky hole locations set over water hazards with which to contend," said Rowe. "It was excellent to watch some fine short games on display."

"To be led by our three sophomores (Austin Liu T6, Luke Adam T11 and Nicholas Mok T11) is encouraging, and the scorecards were colorful indicating plenty of offensive play," Rowe said.
Capturing medalist honors was Alex Chin of San Francisco with a final-round 70 for a 213 total and a one-shot victory over Dons teammate Soren Lind (73-214). Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton was third at 215.
Liu shared top honors with Tim Widing of San Francisco in par-4 scoring at one under par while Podres was third in par-5 scoring at seven under par. Mok and Adam were tied for fourth in par-3 scoring at even par.
Podres, Draper and Mok all carded an eagle in the tournament. Mok, Liu and Podres were tied for ninth with 10 birdies while Draper led the field with his 38 pars.
Cal Poly returns to action next Monday through Wednesday at The Prestige hosted by Stanford at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.
""The training of the course at Coto de Caza tees us up well for the challenge of The Prestige next week," said Rowe. "The competitive field at that event will be the strongest of our whole spring schedule. Let's see how much higher we can ride there!"
