Mustangs Slip to 81-64 Saturday Setback at Hawai’i
2/6/2021 11:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU, O'ahu – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma recorded his team leading ninth double-digit scoring game of the year with a program best 18 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball team closed its season series against Hawai'i with an 81-64 loss Saturday evening inside the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Sophomore guard Colby Rogers added 16 points for Cal Poly (3-13, 1-9), which shot 41.8 (23-for-55) percent from the floor. Hawai'i (6-5, 4-5), however, finished with a 55.2 (32-for-58) percent mark – just a three-point decline from Friday's victory against Cal Poly – as the Rainbow Warriors secured a regular season sweep of the Mustangs.
Freshman guard Brantly Stevenson also finished with 12 points for Cal Poly, converting all four field goal and all four free throw attempts.
Cal Poly plays the first of its final four Big West Conference series when hosting Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center is 4 p.m. both afternoons.
Saturday's matchup with Hawai'i featured nine lead changes, seven tied scorelines and neither side carving out more than a three-point lead inside the opening 15 minutes. Hawai'i eventually scratched out a 33-28 advantage after forward Casdon Jardine sank two free throws – baskets that started an 8-1 streak for the Rainbow Warriors. The run handed the hosts the game's first double-digit lead at 39-29 with Hawai'i ultimately taking a 44-35 advantage into the break.
A jumper from senior guard Keith Smith cut Cal Poly's deficit to 44-38 one minute into the second half, but Hawai'i kept the Mustangs without a field goal for a five-minute stretch and furthered the lead to as much as 17 points.
Cal Poly, however, responded with a 11-2 run as Koroma scored on three successive possessions to help the Mustangs close Hawai'i's lead to 58-50 with 10 minutes remaining. Hawai'i recovered though, scoring on its next two possessions to push the advantage back into double-digit range for the remainder of the evening.
