Cal Poly Falls Down the Stretch at Long Beach State Friday, 64-60

LONG BEACH – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma (above) produced his first career double-double Friday evening with a team leading 14 points and game best 11 rebounds, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after leading Long Beach State for the opening 34 minutes – fell inside Walter Pyramid, 64-60.
Freshman guard Camren Pierce added eight points for Cal Poly (3-14, 1-10) which – playing its first game in 13 days – led Long Beach State (4-7, 3-4), 54-48, with seven minutes remaining. However, Long Beach State – limited to a 33.3 (17-for-51) percent field goal mark and 11.8 (2-for-17) three-point mark by Cal Poly – closed the matchup with a 16-6 run to overtake the Mustangs.
Long Beach State's four-point lead at the buzzer marked its largest lead of the day.
Cal Poly and Long Beach State conclude the two-game series with another 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Feb. 20.
During Friday's meeting, Cal Poly scored on its opening two possessions and led 8-2 after three minutes. In holding Long Beach State to a 16.7 (3-for-18) percent shooting start, Cal Poly still maintained an 18-12 advantage eight minutes before the break. The Beach rallied to tie the matchup, 18-18, and deadlocked the scoreline once more with 74 seconds remaining in the half before a jumper by Mustang junior forward Tuukka Jaakkola handed Cal Poly the 27-25 advantage at the break.
Into the second half, Cal Poly twice stretched its lead to seven points – the second instance occurring with a 51-44 advantage and eight-and-a-half minutes remaining. Long Beach State, however, kept Cal Poly scoreless for an ensuing three-minute span, utilizing a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the afternoon at 56-54.
Cal Poly – held to just one field goal in the final five minutes – led just once more with freshman forward Brantly Stevenson sinking two free throw attempts to place the Mustangs ahead, 58-57, with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Two Koroma free throws with 25 seconds left on the clock cut Long Beach State's lead to 61-60. With Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession though, Long Beach State guard Michael Carter III – who finished with 23 points – sank three of four free throw opportunities to keep his side in front.
