Cal Poly on Downside of 74-69 Saturday Decision at Long Beach State
2/20/2021 7:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LONG BEACH – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma (above) enjoyed a career high 22-point effort to chalk up his 12th double-digit scoring game of the season Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program sustained its second loss versus Long Beach State in as many afternoons, dropping a 74-69 decision inside Walter Pyramid.
Sophomore guard Colby Rogers added 14 points for Cal Poly (3-15, 1-11), which led Long Beach State (5-7, 4-4) once during the final 23 minutes – but never trailed by more than six points the entire afternoon. In a matchup that featured eight overall lead changes, Cal Poly knocked down 10 three-pointers and committed just nine turnovers, but Long Beach State shot 46.6 (27-for-58) percent from the floor.
Koroma, who was 8-for-9 from the free throw line, also pulled down a team best seven rebounds.
Cal Poly completes its 11-game home schedule inside Mott Athletics Center when hosting UC Davis for a two-game, Feb. 26-27 series. Tip time is 2 p.m. both afternoons.
During Saturday's matchup, Long Beach State secured the opening two buckets before Cal Poly reeled off an 11-2 run to go up by four points – its largest lead of the afternoon – after five-and-a-half minutes. A jumper from freshman guard Camren Pierce with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening half placed the Mustangs up, 29-28. Cal Poly's last lead, however, was erased after Long Beach State guard Jadon Jones sank two free throws as the hosts took a 36-31 lead into the break.
Into the second half, Cal Poly twice tied the matchup before freshman forward Brantly Stevenson sank one of his three three-pointers with just under seven minutes remaining to hand the Mustangs their final lead at 61-59.
Three possessions later, Long Beach State guard Chance Hunter contributed a three-pointer to swing the lead back to his side.
Cal Poly cut its deficit to four points four times in the final two-and-a-half minutes, but drew no closer down the stretch.
