Cal Poly Sets Program Blocks Record, but Falls Friday to UC Davis
2/26/2021 5:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore guard Colby Rogers scored a career high 19 points Friday evening and the Cal Poly men's basketball program set a new program record with 13 blocks, but UC Davis pulled away from the Mustangs late in the first half en route to the Aggies securing a 69-61 victory inside Mott Athletics Center.
Forwards Tuukkaa Jaakkola and Brantly Stevenson both finished with nine points for Cal Poly (3-16, 1-12), which led UC Davis midway through the first half before the Aggies posted a 16-0 run to control the lead for the remainder of the afternoon.
Defensively, Cal Poly recorded 10 first-half blocks – one shy of the program single-game record of 11 set during a triple-overtime home loss versus UC Davis on Feb. 15, 2018. Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma earned the program-record 12th block in the second half – one of the career best six he enjoyed, a total one shy of forward Hank Hollingsworth's single-game record set on Jan. 6, 2018.
Koroma grabbed a game high eight rebounds.
Cal Poly concludes its series with UC Davis and closes its 11-game home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
During Friday's matchup, six early Jaakkola points helped Cal Poly establish a 16-11 lead after 11 minutes. The Aggies, however, answered with their 16-0 run in just five minutes, assuming a 27-16 lead four minutes before halftime.
Cal Poly rallied in pursuit of closing the gap with two free throws from freshman guard Kobe Sanders and a jumper by senior guard Keith Smith shortening the deficit to 31-25 with 30 seconds to go in the half. UC Davis guard Caleb Fuller, however, completed a three-point play with three seconds on the clock to hand the Aggies a 34-25 advantage heading into the break.
Cal Poly twice came within six points of the UC Davis lead early in the second half but, facing a 42-36 deficit, the Mustangs were kept without a field goal for just over three minutes as the Aggies ran their lead to 53-38 with 11-and-a-half minutes to go.
The Mustangs enjoyed one more opportunity to overtake UC Davis late in the matchup, trailing 66-61 with 84 seconds to play. UC Davis, however, knocked down three of four free throw attempts down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
