Cal Poly Sustains 68-66 Overtime Loss to UC Davis in Home Finale
2/27/2021 5:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore guard Colby Rogers was one of three Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after being held scoreless in overtime against UC Davis – closed its 11-game home schedule with a 68-66 loss inside Mott Athletics Center.
Sophomore Alimamy Koroma (above) and fellow forward Brantly Stevenson each finished with 15 points for Cal Poly (3-17, 1-13), which led during Saturday's opening minute, trailed for the ensuing 34 and matched its largest advantage of the afternoon – two points – after Rogers sank his third three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in regulation to hand the Mustangs a 66-64 lead.
Aggies guard Ezra Manjon missed a layup during the following UC Davis possession, but a Cal Poly turnover back in transition provided the Aggies one last opportunity in the final seconds. After forward Kennedy Koehler missed a three-pointer, Koroma was whistled for fouling guard Caleb Fuller on a putback attempt. Fuller sank both free throws to send the matchup to overtime.
Fuller then hit a jumper 17 seconds into overtime – a basket that held up as the game-winning shot for UC Davis. Cal Poly finished 0-for-5 from the floor in its first overtime game of the year, capped by senior wing Mark Crowe missing a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. UC Davis, meanwhile, was 1-for-6 in the extra period.
Graduate forward Riley Till enjoyed a career high for blocks, recording half of Cal Poly's eight.
Cal Poly closes its 22-game regular season schedule with a two-game, March 5-6 series at UC Santa Barbara. Tip time both afternoons from The Thunderdome is 5 p.m. with Friday's series opener streamed via ESPN3.
Kept to a solitary field goal during the opening seven minutes on Saturday, Cal Poly trailed early, 12-5. Still facing a 20-12 deficit near the nine-minute mark, however, Cal Poly received a three-pointer from freshman guard Aidan Prukop and two Rogers free throws to lower the Aggie lead to 20-17. The Mustangs cut the UC Davis advantage to three points twice more before taking a 32-26 deficit into halftime.
Twice more Cal Poly closed within a point of UC Davis during the opening 13 minutes of the second half before three-pointers from Rogers, Crowe and Stevenson during three successive possessions handed the Mustangs a 58-57 lead with four-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Freshman guard Camren Pierce followed with a free throw a minute later to provide Cal Poly its largest lead. The two sides traded the lead twice more with the Rogers three-pointer with 27 seconds left in regulation providing Cal Poly the 66-64 advantage.
