Rogers Sets New Career Scoring High; Mustangs Fall at Big West Leader UCSB

SANTA BARBARA – Sophomore guard Colby Rogers finished with 21 points to set a new career scoring high for the second time in his last three games, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program opened its final Big West Conference series of the regular season with a 71-57 loss versus UC Santa Barbara Friday evening inside The Thunderdome.
Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma added 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting for Cal Poly (3-18, 1-14), which recorded its second highest field goal mark of the year – 49.0 (24-for-49) percent – to outshoot Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara (18-4, 12-3), which finished with a 47.3 (26-for-55) percent mark. Big West leader UC Santa Barbara, however, forced Cal Poly into 17 turnovers, reached the free throw line three times as much as the Mustangs and led for the final 31 minutes.
Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara complete the regular season on Saturday, March 6. Tip time is 5 p.m. with action streamed once more via ESPN3.
Cal Poly enjoyed its lone lead of the afternoon at 4-3 following a Koroma jumper two minutes into action. UC Santa Barbara then swung the lead back in the home direction following a dunk from forward Miles Norris on the ensuing possession. Cal Poly deadlocked the scoreline three times in the next six minutes but, with the game tied 13-13, UC Santa Barbara reeled off a 16-6 run to take its first double-digit lead at 29-19.
Facing a 33-23 deficit at the break, Cal Poly cut UC Santa Barbara's lead to single digit just once in the second half as Koroma opened the period with a jumper.
The Gauchos led by as much as 16 in the second half en route to victory.
