Hawai’i Outdistances Cal Poly in 84-68 Win Friday Evening
2/5/2021 11:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HONOLULU, O'ahu – Sophomore guard Colby Rogers led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 15 points late Friday evening, but Hawai'i pulled away from the Mustangs late in the first half and led by double digits the entirety of the second as the Rainbow Warriors posted an 84-68 victory inside the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma added 14 points and senior wing Mark Crowe finished with 12 for Cal Poly (3-12, 1-8), which shot 41.4 (24-for-58) percent from the floor, knocked down 10 three-pointers and committed just eight turnovers. Hawai'i (6-5, 4-5), meanwhile, shot 58.3 (28-for-48) percent in the season series opener that was rescheduled earlier this week after the original Dec. 27-28 game dates had been cancelled.
Cal Poly and Hawai'i conclude the two-game season series with a 9 p.m. PT (7 p.m. HT) matchup on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Cal Poly forced Hawai'i into four turnovers inside the opening six minutes, but the Mustangs opened with a 1-for-10 shooting start and trailed early, 7-2. The Mustangs, however, then received two Rogers three-pointers and a Koroma layup, using the 8-0 run to take their first lead of the evening.
The two sides traded the lead three more times but, after Hawai'i guard Junior Madut sank a three-pointer to hand the hosts a 17-15 edge, the Rainbow Warriors finished the opening half with a 24-16 run to take a 41-31 advantage into the break.
Cal Poly cut its deficit to 10 points three times in the second half, but never to single digits.
